Having a theoretical physicist background (Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers), Jean-Louis Pinault is a geophysicist and a hydrogeologist.
He shows that El Niño results from the coupling of annual and quadrennial quasi-stationary baroclinic waves in the tropical Pacific Ocean, hence better consideration of observations for the ENSO forecast.
On the other hand, natural climate variability results from long-period quasi-stationary Rossby waves winding around the five subtropical gyres and resonantly forced b
